Indiana Real Estate State Requirements

Salesperson's license
To obtain a salesperson license, an individual must:
- Be at least 18 years of age before applying for a license and must not have a conviction for:
- an act that would constitute a ground for disciplinary sanction under IC25-1-11;
- a crime that has a direct bearing on the individual's ability to practice competently; or
- a crime that indicates the individual has the propensity to endanger the public;
- Have successfully completed courses in the principles, practices, and law of real estate, totaling 8 semester credit hours, or their equivalent, as a student at an accredited college or university or have successfully completed an approved salesperson course as provided by the commission
- Apply for a license by submitting the fee prescribed by the commission and an application
- Pass a written examination prepared and administered by the commission or its duly appointed agent; and
- Submit not more than 1 year after passing the written examination, a sworn certification of a principal broker that the principal broker intends to associate with the applicant and maintain that association until notice of termination of the association is given to the commission.
Broker's license
To obtain a broker license, an individual must:
- Be at least 18 years of age before applying for a license and must not have a conviction for:
- an act that would constitute a ground for disciplinary sanction under IC25-1-11;
- a crime that has a direct bearing on the individual's ability to practice competently; or
- a crime that indicates the individual has the propensity to endanger the public;
- Have satisfied continuous active experience for 1 year immediately preceding the application as a licensed salesperson in Indiana. However, this 1 year experience requirement may be waived by the commission upon a finding of equivalent experience;
- Have successfully completed an approved broker course of study
- Apply for a license by submitting the application fee prescribed by the commission and an application
- Pass a written examination prepared and administered by the commission or its duly appointed agent; and
- Within 1 year after passing the commission examination, submit the license fee
Indiana requires written permission for use of reciprocal license.
Indiana has reciprocity with the following states: Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin.
Continuing Education/License Renewal
To renew a broker or salesperson license each individual has to complete 16 hours of approved continuing education before the end of each cycle. The education requirement is as follows:
- At least 6 hours in any of the following subjects as determined by the commission:
- License and escrow law
- Civil rights law
- Agency law
- Listing contracts and purchase agreements
- Ethics and professionals standards
- Settlement procedures
- Other courses approved by the commission
- The remaining 10 hours may be taken in any Commission approved elective courses
